Residents track down men suspected of stealing from special school

Tsakani – Four men suspected of breaking into Matshidiso Special School two weeks ago were apprehended by the community last week.

It was reported that the perpetrators gained access to the school kitchen by breaking a brick wall, thereby avoiding the motion sensors used as part of the security measures.

They stripped the school of medical supplies and educational equipment.

Once word was on the street about the dilemma the school faced, community members mobilised to track down the culprits.

The community followed a lead about a resident who was allegedly selling stoves, microwaves and stationery for a low price in the area.
He was apprehended by a taxi driver who worked at Tsakani Mall.

School principal Thapelo Tshetlo said that through working with residents, they were able to recover some of the stolen items.

“One stove was sold to a pensioner for R500 while a second stove was sold to a pawn shop in Brakpan. He also gave us the receipt.

“We were able to recover some of the stationery found at their homes,” he added.

Tshetlo urges medical agencies or businesses to assist with donations of medical supplies, which include oxygen cylinders, humidifiers, sanitary towels and bedding for the sick bay.

“We will appreciate any support we receive. All we want is to ensure our learners’ needs and safety are catered for,” he added.

The apprehended men were handed to the police for further investigation.

Tsakani police spokesperson, Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu, was unable to comment on the matter.
