Community erects speed humps after requests go unanswered
The metro says the action is illegal.
Kwa-Thema – The community of White City in Kwa-Thema have erected their own speed humps.
This comes after they thought it is unsafe on the roads as motorists don’t adhere to the speed limit.
According to Ward 79 Clr Njabulo Mbonani, community members have been complaining about these roads not having humps.
“They have been coming to the office to fill in petitions which I have passed to the municipality but haven’t received any response,” Mbonani said.
Mbonani said he was told that the community has erected their own hump after a child was struck by a car on Mogatle Street.
The spokesperson of the metro, Zweli Dlamini, said, “It is the metro’s responsibility to maintain the roads in Kwa-Thema.
“In terms of petitions, proof of such submissions is requested so that we can do a proper investigation and find out how far the process has progressed.”
Dlamini said it is illegal for the community to dig the roads, trying to erect their own humps.

“We have pavement management systems to manage the roll-out of speed humps and the general maintenance of the roads.
“It must be noted that not all roads qualify to have humps and also there is a high number of humps throughout the city yet resources are limited.”
Mbonani said Thema Road is also seen by the community to be a high accident zone.
“This matter will be investigated and upon merit a speed hump or humps can then be erected,” said Dlamini.
