Clever Boys’ first time participating in the league

“It was a test for us and it was not an easy one, but we won.”

Duduza – Duduza Stadium was the place to be when the Clever Boys U15 and U17 teams played home games against rivals Hyper Academy on Saturday.

The U15 team played to a draw, while the U17 played to a 2-1 win.

The teams played in the Ekurhuleni Development League, which started on May 28 and is new for all Ekurhuleni football teams.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) organised the league, with two divisions, U15 and U17, playing on the same day. The winner will participate in the Gauteng Development League (GDL).

The Clever Boys coach, Johannes Mokoena, said he was satisfied with how his teams played because Hyper Academy was one of the big teams around Ekurhuleni.

“Hyper Academy is a strong team with a pool of skilled players. They are also on the GDL stream A, which means they play with other academies all over the Gauteng province,” said Mokoena.

He said his teams were in position nine of 12 in the league, and they were still new and did not know what to expect.

He highlighted that Hyper Academy was one of the Ekurhuleni Development League contenders, and they also played against big teams like Orlando Pirates.

“It was a test for us, and it was not an easy one, but we won. I always tell my players not to weigh themselves but to give every match their best performance, even with skilled teams like Hyper Academy,” said Mokoena.

Nkululeko Cele for Clever Boy U17 was voted man of the match alongside Ntsikelilo Tlagae for U15, also from Clever Boys.
