Help athlete’s dreams come true
The athlete has been awarded a US scholarship but needs funds to get to New York.
Kwa-Thema – Waterfall Athletics Club athlete Tinashe Bure (22) is still struggling to get funds for a visa and a plane ticket.
Monroe College in New York, USA, awarded Bure a sports scholarship. He will leave SA for New York on August 21. However, it is a dream that seems farfetched to Bure because he can’t afford the travelling costs.
The scholarship will pay for tuition, housing, meals, books, and supplies.
Bure’s coach, Moeketsi ‘Sparks’ Moagi, said Bure was the second runner in two years from Waterfall and Ward 79 to receive a scholarship to study abroad.
“I am proud of Bure because it shows the hard work we’ve been putting in is now showing good results,” Moagi said.
He said it would be shameful if Bure failed to go because of insufficient funding.
Moagi said, “I hope Bure will encourage other parents to let their children join sports clubs. They are also welcome to join Waterfall.
“It makes me happy seeing my students walk in my footsteps because I’ve also been to different countries through running.”
He pleaded that the stadium be accessible for children to train because the complex will close for renovations.
“It has been difficult for us to access the stadium since Covid. It was discouraging and will lead to children engaging in bad things because they have nothing to do,” he concluded.
Ward 79 Clr Njabulo Mbonani urged the community to donate toward the plane ticket.
“We don’t want to see talent going to waste, but we want to see it nurtured. Bure might be discouraged and leave sports if he misses this opportunity,” Mbonani said.
Bure’s visa costs R720, and a plane ticket costs R18 000.
Those wanting to help can contact Bure on 063 046 8960, Ben Mkhabela on 081 075 0599, Moagi on 083 567 4378 or Mbonani on 071 412 9833.
