Scouts to celebrate Founder’s Day
Adults from the ages of 18 and above are also welcome to join as adult scout leaders.
Every year on February 22, Scouts from all over the world celebrate the birth of the movement’s founder, Robert Baden-Powell of Gilwell, and this year will be no different.
Known as Founder’s Day, it is a day for Scouts and Guides to renew their promises together and reflect on how the century-old values of Scouting still resonate in the fast and ever-changing modern world we live in.
“Founder’s Day is also known as World Scout Day,” explained Tebogo Rakgabyane, Scout group leader of Unified Scout Group.
The day is also significant since it also marks the anniversary of his wife, Olave Baden-Powell, the world chief guide.
“Baden-Powell’s words of wisdom have moulded the Scout movement in the world for more than 100 years, which is why we celebrate his life on Founder’s Day.
“He was born February 22, 1857, and died on January 8, 1941. He worked tirelessly to support the movement, as we have it today,” he added.
The East Rand District of South Africa will commemorate the day on February 25 and will have a BP parade and award ceremony at Arrowe Park Scout Centre in Benoni.
Unified Scout Group will on the day also receive long service awards and medals for nine of its adult leaders.
“Our Rover crew has also qualified for the gold level of the Star Crew Award, and this will be presented at the BP parade.
“We would like to thank all the parents and Scouters, adult leaders, who are working tirelessly to see Unified Scout
Group advancing and growing, and we hope to see many more years to come as a group.
“The group celebrates 42 years of existence since it was started back in 1982, from Redumeletswe Primary School, and we are planning to have a Scout reunion and anniversary on July 6,” he said.
All former Scouts/Scouters who have taken part in the group, from its inception as the 2nd KwaThema Scout Group, to what the group is now called, Unified Scout Group, are invited to the planned reunion.
Unified Scout Group meets on Saturdays from 11:00 to 13:00 at I-MAC Scout Centre, 9936 Wauchope Street in Kwa-Thema.
They admit youth members from five to 30 years old:
• Meerkats: five and six years
• Cubs: seven to 10 years
• Scouts: 11 to 17 years
• Rover Scouts: 18 to 30 years
Adults from the ages of 18 and above are also welcome to join as adult scout leaders.
