Tracing operation sees one arrest

The man was detained and charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm. It was also learnt that the suspect is a foreign national.

On Wednesday at about 01:00, a tracing operation by Kwa-Thema detectives saw the arrest of a foreign national.

The operation was underway when they noticed a vehicle on Maruping Street. The driver tried to speed off, and the officers gave chase.

A shoot-out ensued.

“Three of them were armed, and the suspects fired at the detectives, so the officers returned fire.

“One suspect was later apprehended with a firearm in his possession at Ekuthuleni informal settlement with the aid of Crime Prevention Wardens,” explained Kwa-Thema Police Station’s communications officer, Constable Nkululeko Magudulela.

The man was detained and charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm. It was also learnt that the suspect is a foreign national.

“He is also charged under suspicion that he is an illegal immigrant,” added Magudulela.

The SAPS linked the firearm to a case of one stolen from a security company in Fochville in an armed robbery in August 2018.

“Investigations continue to link the suspect and firearm to other crimes,” he said.
