The San Michele Home and Ekurhuleni Health District hosted a mental health outreach at Tsakane Mall to raise awareness around intellectual disabilities. We asked the community if they believe there are enough facilities and programmes that cater to mentally challenged persons.
Mapaseka Nkomonde:
I think there aren’t enough because when it comes to mental health, there are still grey areas. Mental health needs to be prioritised as much as medical assistance is prioritised when someone comes in with an injury.
Gertrude Gwiji:
There is a shortage of facilities that cater to mentally challenged people because most of the time you will find that they don’t even have wheelchairs, proper equipment and public bathrooms that cater to them. They need more facilities.
Xolisiwe Gxothiwe:
It's not enough. They need to be taken care of and some of them must use a wheelchair to get around. They don’t only need more facilities, they also need caretakers who will help them run errands to lead a more normal life.
Ephream Shabangu:
They can still add more programmes. Such an outreach is good but not everyone is comfortable being helped in a public space. We need to have more facilities so that people can be assisted in a private and comfortable environment.
Watson Rakgoale:
I think there are enough facilities because many people have been screened today. It was open to anyone, and we had great insight into our health. I wish more people could realise we have facilities like this that are just waiting to be utilised.
