A man has been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment on counts of business burglary, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder.
In September 2019, three officers on duty from the EMPD Specialised Task Team received information about two suspects seen driving in a white bakkie who had stolen property in their possession.
While patrolling, the officers saw a car fitting the given description. According to Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, the EMPD spokesperson, the officers stopped the car on the N12 highway just before the Craft Road on-ramp.
As they attempted to pull the car over, the suspects opened fire in their direction. After the shoot-out, they arrested one man with multiple gun wounds, while the other was declared dead on the scene.
The man was sentenced on March 5. The EMPD welcomed the conviction, applauding the officers for their work and commitment to bringing the perpetrators to book.
