Local fashion week hits the streets of ekasi

Stephen Monoki said his highlight was seeing people buy garments and accessories showcased on the day.

Kwa-Thema – The local fashion initiative eKasi Fashion Week (EFW) set up its runway on bustling Nkosi Street on Saturday.

“The idea came from not having the high booking fee local venues charge creatives. I decided to do it on the streets. To my surprise, it became the best showcase.

“It felt like we were a walking mall with a live audience of people from ko kasi,” said founder Stephen Monoki.

The event gave creators and buyers a chance to network.

“People loved the concept. They thought it was authentic. I heard among the people someone shouting, ‘yiNew York yase Kasi,’ (It is New York in our neighbourhood),” he added.

Monoki said his highlight was seeing people buy garments and accessories showcased on the day.

“Moving forward, we want to grow the fashion and runway industries. We want to groom young emerging designers, runway models, beauticians and avant-garde hairstylists,” he said.
