Learners leave hospital after food poisoning scare

The Gauteng Department of Education is investigating a foodborne illness scare at Vuyani Primary School after 21 learners were hospitalized with stomach cramps, but all have since been discharged in good health.

Tsakani – The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) confirmed that about 21 Vuyani Primary School learners were discharged after being hospitalised early on November 8 with symptoms consistent with a foodborne illness.

It is said the learners began reporting stomach cramps on Friday morning shortly after their school break, so they were taken to different healthcare facilities for immediate medical attention.

The GDE confirmed that all the affected learners were discharged later in the afternoon after being treated and are in good health.

The department said it is working closely with health officials to investigate the cause of this incident and ensure the well-being of learners.
