Springs Girls dive into polar plunge
Over 50 learners braved the cold raising funds for the Springs SPCA in a spirited show of compassion and community.
Springs Girls High School hosted its annual polar plunge on August 1 to raise funds for the Springs SPCA. Speaking to Springs Advertiser, Akira Vorster, the school’s swimming manager, said that this year’s turnout was a success, as it was bigger than last year’s event.
She said that the girls came through by participating, with one teacher also taking part. She also said that while some girls don’t participate, they do donate what they can to raise funds for the organisation.
“We had 53 learners who participated. They either swam the length of the pool or, for those who can’t swim, they walked the shallow part of the pool,” said Vorster.
Vorster said that she is proud of the girls who participated and those who donated. She highlighted that some learners don’t have pets but are still willing to give back to the organisation.

She added that the learners are always willing to support the initiative that is implemented by the school. Vorster expressed gratitude to the teacher who participated, saying that if staff show an interest, it draws the learners to take part as well.
“We raised a total of R2 800, and this will be donated in items purchased for the SPCA,” she said.
Angelica Botha-Wilkinson, one of the participants, shared with the publication that she enjoyed partaking in the plunge.
“It was cold, but worth it. You are only cold for five seconds, and then it is just pure fun. I will be doing it again next year.”
