Tsakani’s Ikamva Elihle wins Naledi Award for Best Fringe Theatre Production
Against all odds, a community theatre group from Tsakani rose through mentorship, training, and sheer talent to win big
Established in 2020 Ikamva Elihle Art Production, a vibrant community theatre group from Tsakane, has won big at the prestigious Naledi Theatre Awards.
Taxi Wars, written, directed, and produced by Penwell Shane Sibanyoni and Ayanda Martin, has taken home the Best Fringe Theatre Production award.
“This achievement is the culmination of a remarkable five-year artist development programme offered by the City of Ekurhuleni.
“The journey began with a mini drama festival, where Ikamva Elihle was selected as one of the top four through a rigorous adjudication process.
“Through intensive training and mentorship, the cast and crew honed their skills in acting, voice, dance, storytelling, lighting, sound, and stage management,” explained Martin.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the team persevered, fueled by their shared passion for storytelling. The stage production was ranked number one among selected productions to represent the City of Ekurhuleni at Joburg Theatre.
“We are currently in our second year at Wits (Drama for Life) under Joburg Theatre Youth Development (APAAM), further refining our craft,” added Martin.
Ikamva Elihle Art Production extends its gratitude to Pascar Dube, Ekurhuleni Performing Arts Manager, and his team Vusi Mdaka, Ivy Matsobane, Diseko Mabasa, Oupa Ramaleba and Dumisani Masilela supervisors for their pivotal role in the production’s success.
The Naledi award recognizes the group’s exceptional talent, dedication, and perseverance.
“Taxi Wars is a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and artistic excellence,” he said.
