Tec United wins Women’s Month Top 16 Tournament after dramatic penalty shootout
Tec United edged out Happy Hour 5–4 on penalties in a nail-biting final at Malandela Ground, claiming the top prize in the third annual Women’s Month Top 16 Tournament.
Tsakani – The final game of the third annual Women’s Month Top 16 Tournament took place on August 17 at the Malandela Ground, with Tec United edging Happy Hour in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
The match was an intense showdown, with both sides pushing to their limits.
“We pushed as best as we could and maintained form. All we wanted was to win. The first half did not give us a chance to breathe as we were all playing for victory. My team was consistent and determined to win,” said Tec United coach Bheki Mchunu.
His team triumphed 5-4 on penalties and walked away with R10 000 in prize money.
“This win proves that all we wanted was to succeed, and we did so exceptionally,” he said, adding that the team has what it takes to win more tournaments.

Happy Hour, who finished runners-up, received R3 000. Their coach, Thabiso Mthembu, expressed disappointment at the result.
“I am, however, happy with my team’s improvement compared to how we played in the semi-finals. Although things did not pan out as I had anticipated, we still have room to learn and improve,” he said.
Mthembu added that his side dominated the first half and created clear chances but failed to capitalise.
“Things took a sharp turn in the second half. I had to substitute a player due to injury, and the winger who came on played as a striker. He got us an amazing goal,” he explained.
Tournament organiser Thuso Mtseni said the event continues to grow but needs support.
“Our tournament is in need of sponsorship from businesses, individuals and recognition from big clubs. The games are for the community in honour of Women’s Month, as women are the pillar of everything.

“Our biggest aim is to expose talented individuals to football-related platforms, keeping them fit, occupied and off the streets,” he said.
Mtseni highlighted that football brings people together.
“Commemorating women through football helps us embrace women while encouraging men to respect and honour them. We also want women to join us on the field, bring their teams and have fun.
“Beyond prize money, we would like teams to also receive medals, kits and certificates of recognition, but this can only be achieved with sponsorship,” he added.
