“Let them read to you every day”: Reading competition unites parents, learners
Learners showcased their reading skills at the Active Academy’s annual competition while parents were urged to guide their children at home.
Kwa-Thema – The Active Academy After School Programme recently hosted its annual reading competition at Ntokozweni Primary School, during which learners showcased their skills in front of parents.
“I want the parents to experience these events and see how they can help their children at home. Reading is important for education. I hope they let them read to them every day and guide them where needed,” said Nthabiseng Mampa, the founder of the programme.
The learners, from different schools, could select a book to read in English, Afrikaans, or isiZulu. The program accommodates learners from grades One to 10.
“The purpose of the competition is not for the learners to do better than each other, but to improve their reading,” Mampa said.

Also present was Ward 79 Clr Njabulo Mbonani.
“I am happy to see parents in attendance. Everything that happens in our homes affects how our children behave in school. We are getting too many reports about bullying, and I believe we can change that in our homes,” he explained.
Mbonani encouraged parents to be attentive to their children and discipline them where necessary.
“I cannot be the only one responsible for shaping our children into better people,” he added.
He also encouraged parents to seek help from the community.
