Ncholo channels unity, heritage, youth empowerment through art

Through his upcoming single Nkosi Sikelei and impactful youth platforms, Tsakani-born artist Mpho ‘Taded’ Ncholo is blending music, culture and social awareness to reignite SA’s spirit of unity and pride.

Tsakani – Mpho ‘Taded’ Ncholo is a versatile artist working on a single titled Nkosi Sikelei, an inspirational song in the form of a prayer. The national anthem, which incorporates a prayer for the nation and its people, inspired the song.

“In the chorus, I ask God to bless Africa. We are known as the rainbow nation, a loving nation, and those are values I grew up with in my family and community. However, I feel these qualities have not been showcased much lately,” explained Ncholo.

According to him, diversity and the spirit of togetherness have always been key to what it means to be South African. He hopes his song will remind people of that heritage.

“The song also carries a personal story of collaboration. I first recorded the chorus alone last year while working on my project, set to drop on November 1. Listening back this year, I felt the song needed to showcase the different communities that make up the country.

“That is when Focus from Cape Town joined in, and Kit Kat Magandi added his unmistakable ‘Spova’ (SA streetwear and lifestyle brand) energy and lingo,” he explained.

“Both artists brought a fresh flavour, helping expand the message of unity. My inspiration always comes from my surroundings. Even though I rap in English most of the time, I never want people to mistake where I come from. That SA identity must always shine.”

Ncholo’s promo video reflects his vision, featuring live bands, him performing in a tracksuit with a Springbok T-shirt and various references to sports, symbolising how diverse SA culture really is.

Beyond his music career, Ncholo has worked on initiatives that uplift and connect entertainment, education and social awareness. He runs them through his podcast, a platform that recognises and empowers young people.

“There is insufficient representation among our peers when it comes to social issues we face. That alone motivated me to create platforms where young people can talk about these issues and showcase their talent,” he said.

The platform has given students opportunities to participate in talent shows, with the winners featured on other media platforms.

The sessions also champion issues such as GBV, career advice and community challenges, while balancing performances to keep audiences entertained.

His show has done well, with over 100 live episodes, and continues to attract listeners. His hard work and dedication also earned him a slot on a radio station whose vision aligns with his.

Ncholo’s collaboration with Clifford Samuel Kojo Adu, the founder of Afrika Tumi Production, gave him the chance to finally shoot in the studio.

“That has been my long-time dream. Brands such as AEC Wang (Soweto streetwear and lifestyle brand) also came on board to help bring my vision to life,” he added.

The show has a special dedication to women. Ncholo says he noticed how female creatives are rarely celebrated for their achievements in interviews.

“Every episode brings unique insights. Women go through so much in the industry. The positions they hold today are the result of hard work, dedication and the struggle of balancing lifestyle, family, friends and relationships,” he stated.

Looking ahead, his long-term vision is to grow the show into a full-fledged media network, expand into TV and bring in other presenters.
