Grade Seven learners shine at primary school Market Day

Grade Seven learners at Michael Zulu Primary School showcased their entrepreneurial skills during an exciting Market Day event.

Tsakani – Michael Zulu Primary School held a vibrant Market Day for Grade Seven learners on September 5, giving them the opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial skills. The event forms part of the school curriculum under the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) subject.

The school’s parking area was transformed into a lively hub of stalls, entertainment, and community engagement. Each stall was creatively set up, with learners selling a variety of items, including food, snacks, goodies, and sweet treats.

“Market Day is not just about fun; it is an extension of our EMS classroom,” explained Vynah Songo, EMS and Life Skills teacher and event organiser.

“Learners get to practice real-life skills like budgeting, pricing, marketing, and customer service, preparing them for the world beyond school while promoting teamwork, effective communication, and mathematical literacy.”

The event received enthusiastic support from parents and community members. A festival-like atmosphere was created with a braai, a jumping castle, pool games, and lively music.

Stalls such as nail stations, face painting, and a photo booth added a splash of creativity, encouraging visitors to explore every corner of the Market Day.

Songo highlighted that learners had a first-hand experience of handling money by running their own stalls independently, learning the importance of customer service while applying classroom lessons in a real-world setting.

The day not only emphasised entrepreneurship but also fostered community spirit. It brought together learners, parents, teachers, and local supporters to celebrate fun, learning, and youthful innovation.

“The support from parents, the community, and our staff is a testament to the learners’ hard work and imagination,” added Songo.

Market Day proved to be an engaging and practical way for learners to develop essential skills that will benefit them long after school, combining education, creativity, and community involvement in one memorable event.
