The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness recently recognised the Tambo Memorial Hospital as the best-performing cataract surgery hospital in the province.

MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko announced this at a recent World Sight Day commemoration, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to excellence in eye care and its vital role in restoring vision for communities across Boksburg and the surrounding areas.

According to hospital spokesperson Zoliswa Nzeku, the accolade reflects the dedication and expertise of the hospital’s Ophthalmology Department, led by Dr Agnes Kenyeres.

“Under her leadership, the team has consistently delivered life-changing outcomes for patients living with visual impairments, especially those requiring cataract surgery,” said Nzeku.

Besides the provincial recognition, Kenyeres received the lifetime humanitarian award from the Ophthalmological Society of SA during its 51st annual congress in 2023.

Nzeku said the award celebrates Kenyeres’ long-standing commitment to quality eye care and exceptional humanitarian contributions to ophthalmology nationwide.

“Dr Kenyeres’ work continues to transform lives, with many heartfelt testimonies from patients,” Nzeku added.
Among those whose lives were changed is 92-year-old Khukhuza Mdluli, who regained his sight after a cataract procedure at the hospital last year.

“Being able to see again is a gift I never thought I’d receive. These recognitions celebrate individual excellence and reflect the broader impact of a committed public healthcare system working to improve lives across communities,” said Kenyeres.

“It is a team effort. I feel fortunate to receive so much support. Our patients are the true winners, having their sight restored means having their independence and dignity returned.”
