Heidelberg’s Bonga Makgalemele aims for 2028 Olympics
Ratanda's Bonga Makgalemele is sprinting toward an Olympic dream despite facing immense challenges and training without a coach.
A young sprinter from Ratanda, Bonga Makgalemele (23), is defying poverty and hardship in pursuit of his dream of representing South Africa at the 2028 Olympic Games.
Makgalemele, who was born in Duduza, has overcome a life marked by tragedy and adversity. He lost both his parents before he was three, so he was raised by neighbours and community members. Despite growing up under difficult circumstances, his passion for athletics kept him focused.
“I began running the 100m sprint in primary school, encouraged by my first coach, the late Mrs Macu, who saw potential in me. She believed in me long before I believed in myself,” he said.
While attending MOM Sebone Secondary School in Duduza, his commitment to the sport deepened, even without a coach or professional guidance. However, financial difficulties and homelessness forced him to drop out of school in Grade 10.
Now living in a small shack in Ratanda Ext 5, Makgalemele survives on a R370 social grant but continues to train daily.

He competes independently in athletics leagues across the Vaal Triangle, Central Gauteng, and Gauteng North, often racing against professionally trained athletes.
“I currently run the 100m in 10.85 seconds. To qualify for the World Championships, I need to reach 10.05, and I know I can do it. I just need the right support, coaching, and nutrition.
“Sometimes I go three or four days without a proper meal. When I am broke, I buy R2 biscuits just to get through the day. But I do not want to give up because I know God gave me this gift for a reason.”
Makgalemele draws inspiration from Heidelberg-born Olympic silver medallist Khotso Mokoena, whom he regards as his role model.
“I want to follow in his footsteps and put Heidelberg back on the global athletics map. I need running shoes, gym access, supplements, or even proper meals. I just want a chance to show the world what I can do.”
