Firearm and ammunition recovered by Duduza SAPS, suspect arrested

Duduza SAPS acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Pogiso Hendrick Khambula applauded the officers who were able to recover a firearm and ammunition and pleaded with the community to report suspicious activities in the area.

The acting station commander of Duduza SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Pogiso Hendrick Khambula, has welcomed the recovery of an unlicensed firearm and five live rounds of ammunition by the station’s crime prevention members.

According to Duduza SAPS social crime prevention coordinator and communications officer Constable Nobuhle Mnisi, the crime prevention members responded swiftly to an accident scene in Tonk Meter Road near Zamani cemetery, where two motor vehicles had collided.

Mnisi said upon arrival at the scene, the police were informed that one of the drivers involved in the collision was carrying a firearm and had discharged it at the scene. However, when he saw the police vehicle approaching, he fled on foot.

She said that the crime prevention members chased the man, who ran into an open veld, and apprehend him.

Upon searching the 36-year-old man, crime prevention members found one black firearm and five live rounds of ammunition around his waist.

Mnisi explained that while inspecting the firearm, the crime prevention members noticed that the serial number had been tampered with and filed off.

A case of possession of an unlicensed firearm, attempted murder, and reckless and negligent driving, as well as the discharging of a firearm in a municipal area, was opened by the crime prevention members, and the 36-year-old suspect was arrested.

The station commander commended Constable Joel Mokhamaledi, Constable Bheki Mthiyane and Constable Lesedi Mokwena for their dedication and swift response to the call of duty, which led to the recovery of the unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“In an era where gun violence has become prominent and with the festive season approaching, community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or person(s) who may have unlicensed firearms, to follow the rules of the road and to avoid getting into road rage disputes,” said Mnisi.
