Duduza Livestock Owners plant over 500 seedlings at Zakheni Primary School
The initiative aims to teach learners about agriculture while helping them grow food to harvest and take home during school holidays.
Duduza Livestock Owners (DLO) planted over 500 seedlings at Zakheni Primary School on October 24.
In partnership with PPP Environment Project and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the project aims to fight poverty and provide food for learners.
One of the organisers, Themba Victor Mahlangu, said it was important for them to teach learners about the importance of agriculture as well as to encourage them to start their own projects at school and at home.
“All the learners that are involved will be allowed to come and harvest during the school holidays so that they can have something to eat at home,” Mahlangu said.

He added that the PPP Environment Project assisted with human resources by bringing the volunteers on site for the whole week to demarcate the site and develop garden beds, while the department donated seeds and will assist with monitoring and skill development.
“Due to high demand we are busy developing the sustainable plan and we have identified a lot of more things to be done in the garden, therefore this is the continuous project,” Mahlangu concluded.
