Families to register their loved ones struggling with substance addictions

The families with substance addicts are encouraged for the drive led by the Gauteng Provincial Government with 15 sites across the province.

The Gauteng Provincial Government invites people struggling with substance addiction and families seeking help for their loved ones to participate in a registration drive on October 27 at 15 sites across all five regions of Gauteng.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Members of the Executive Council (MECs) will lead the drive as part of the third phase of “Tswa Daar – Ke Moja I am fine without drugs”.

The day marks the campaign’s first anniversary and offers residents an opportunity to register on the campaign database and take the first step towards treatment and recovery.

“The call to residents is clear: if you or someone you love needs help with substance addiction, come forward.

“Individuals and their loved ones are encouraged to visit a registration site to seek assistance and begin the process of accessing appropriate care,” the provincial government said.

The registration drive provides an entry point for residents seeking treatment. Screening and medical and psychosocial assessments help determine the safest and most appropriate care for each person, which may include inpatient treatment, outpatient services or community-based support.

Alongside the registration drive, the campaign strongly emphasises preventing substance use before it starts, particularly among learners, students and young adults.

Parents, caregivers and educators are encouraged to speak openly with young people about substance use, recognise early warning signs and seek support before a crisis develops.

Prevention also means creating opportunities for young people to participate in sport, arts and culture and to develop skills that strengthen their sense of belonging and prospects.

Schools, faith-based organisations, community organisations and youth leaders have an important role in carrying these prevention messages into everyday community life.

Recovery requires continued support beyond treatment, including aftercare, family involvement and reintegration into community life. Families and communities can help by reducing stigma, encouraging people to seek help early, and supporting them throughout recovery.

As the campaign enters its third phase, it shifts from outreach to supporting treatment readiness, completion, and sustained recovery.

“The Gauteng Provincial Government calls on residents to participate in the registration drive on October 27. Come forward for yourself or support a loved one to seek help. Register on the campaign database and begin the journey towards recovery,” said Lesufi.
