Petrol price increase too much

The recent petrol increase of 26 cents has left a bitter taste in my mouth because as it is I am struggling to find a balance and reshuffle things around my budget since the previous increase of 82 cents.

The increase, which came into effect on Wednesday, was announced by the Minister of Energy, Jeff Radebe, last Sunday.

This is the fifth increase this year and as it is we are trying to tighten our belts about the increased VAT which affected everything from food, transport and cellphone data bundles.

The most people who are affected are the poor citizens. I, for one, as a middle-class citizen, can no longer take the increase. It feels like we are now forced to prioritise petrol over anything.

At this point I am even considering buying a bicycle to cycle to work, even though I doubt my employer would be happy about this.

I mean, using public transport is not even an option because the prices are also just as bad.

I have tried to read more about what goes into the petrol prices to understand the increase better and to avoid reacting emotionally about this.

Tax, fuel levy and Road Accident Fund (RAF) are some of the accessories added to this is important but this is just too much.

I am one of the citizens pleading with the government to review the inclusion of RAF in the petrol price.

As it is the agency is haunted about maladministration of funds and honestly, I believe the money should rather be invested to improve the health sector.

Those who are involved in accidents can get better services and not be awarded a million rand for being in an accident.

I know the country is going through an economic turmoil hell. Even the rest of the world is but this is too much. I have tightened my belt as tight as I possibly can but I am now suffocating and living on life support.
