Developing young athletes

Kwatsaduza Athletics Club hosted the Pick n Pay Junior Road Running Series at Bulithando Park in KwaThema on Saturday

More than 200 young runners from different areas around Ekurhuleni took part in the competition.

The competition was open to U/10 boys and girls who competed in a 2.5km run and U/14 boys and girls who competed in a 5km run.

The winners for each category went home with medals and Pick n Pay grocery voucher prizes ranging from R25 to R250.

According to club chairman Sparks Moagi, the aim of the competition was to develop young athletes.

“Our country needs more athletes who will represent the country in world athletics and keep the South African flag flying high,” said Moagi.

One of the runners in the 2.5km run, Mbali Mokoena, said she trained hard to prepare for the competition.

“I believe, in order for me to climb my way to the top as an athlete, I need to start today to work hard so that I can live my dream tomorrow,” she said.

She thanked the club and Pick n Pay for giving young athletes a chance to start working towards fulfilling their dreams. The 5km winners are Ntombi Seabi, Katlego and Karabo Mashelo while Tinash Dure and Zanele Molala won in the 2.5km category.
