Reviving tennis in KwaThema

Reviving tennis in the township, is one of the things that Asaf Rantho says he wants to achieve.

After getting exposed in tennis when still at Strubenvale Primary School, the 22-year-old KwaThema resident said he fell in love with this sport and it has always been his dream to become a professional tennis player.

When in secondary school, Asaf forgot about tennis as it was not available at his school, let alone in his home township.

Being a 22-year-old, Asaf says he hears stories about how good the KwaThema Tennis Club used to be.

He says in an attempt to ensure that tennis does not die in KwaThema, he started the new KwaThema Tennis Club consisting of more than 20 players between the ages of six and 28.

Asaf says it breaks his heart to see the tennis courts in a bad state in the township, showing that nobody cares about tennis and that many people only love and value soccer more than other sporting codes.

He says despite the challenges of not having the best facilities and playing equipment, he will continue to train and encourage the youth to play tennis.

“Tennis can be a career for those who take it seriously and understand what they want,” said Asaf.

To ensure that his dream of having worldwide known tennis players coming from KwaThema, Asaf is urging former tennis players who have a skill and a talent in coaching to voluntarily coach the young tennis players in his club.

If you want to know about when and where the club will be playing or are interested in joining them, you should call Asaf Rantho on 073 827 0275.
