Exercise for good health
KwaThema - Sakhi Gakula, sport coordinator for ward 79, says that sport is not just for the youth but adults need to get fit and set a good example for their children too.
“Parents like to say they don’t have time, but most of them get home and sit on the couch most evenings,” says Gakula.
He believes that most parents would be in better health if they spent a few hours a week doing aerobics.
“People are sick and they are not helping their bodies to recover, and exercise is one of the most effective ways to reverse physical damage caused by illness.
“We have aerobics classes at Langaville Secondary School every week day at 6pm.”
Gakula says although they do not have state-of-the-art facilities, it is a good start.
“This is also to challenge the young ones.
“If they see their parents staying fit, they will be encouraged to do the same,” he explains.
“It doesn’t mean that when you are old your life is over.
“You must choose to enjoy all the time you have left in the world.”
Gakula adds they are also very lucky to have a ward councillor who prioritises health and fitness initiatives in the community.
