Ready to take over the world

KwaThema - Michael Cindi, chief instructor at the KwaThema Shotokan Dojo, is preparing his students for a trip to Cape Town where they will represent Gauteng.

They came out tops at the provincial championships that were held at Wits late last month.

“Our students did very well at the provincials.

“We have seven youngsters from KwaThema who will be competing in Cape Town on May 12 and 13.”

Three of the martial arts students are from Cindi’s club and four are from the Kheletsane Karate Club, led by Archie Motha.

“The Zone 6 championships in Cape Town will also feature a few SADC (Southern African Development Community) countries, so we want our children to shine,” he adds.

Cindi says although they are very excited about the competition, they face great challenges when it comes to travel and accommodation expenses.

He says they do not have sponsors and most of the parents of the participants cannot afford to fund the trip.

“We want to appeal to the community to help us give these children the best possible chance to succeed.”

Cindi believes some of the students will make it to the international leg of the championships in Italy later this year.

“I want to encourage parents to support their children in all things. Even if you do not have money, your presence just to cheer us on means a lot to us.”
