Moagi goes for gold and gets it

KwaThema - Moeketsi Moagi (47) of Linda Athletics Club was awarded his national colours blazer after he won big at the South African Masters Championship.

Moagi, who took part in the steeplechase 3000 and 10000m races, says he has been training only for gold.

“I am really happy about my performance overall,” he adds.

He won a silver medal in the steeple chase 3000, finishing in 10min 52s, and a gold medal for the 10 000m run.

“The only reason I did not get gold for steeple chase was the weather.

“I was frozen from head to toe,” he jokes.

Moagi was honoured with national colours by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation for his excellence in athletics over the years.

“I was overwhelmed by how many people are proud of me for this achievement, especially my wife, who always supports me.”

He says he has also qualified to represent the nation in the international games later this year in Italy.

Pule Tjaoana, Moagi’s coach, says he expected nothing less.

“Whenever he competes he always brings medals home.”

“I want to focus all my attention on development. These children need me to mentor them,” adds Moagi.

Moagi says his mentees will be taking part in an 8km run in Daveyton at Sinaba Stadium on Saturday.
