Home sweepers fight to the finals
“We have identified the areas to improve and we will work on tightening the weak areas".
KwaThema- Springs Home Sweepers Academy u-15 team was knocked out in the finals during the Zodwa Khoza Memorial Games in Soweto over the weekend.
The games are held annually, in the memory of the late Zodwa, who is the daughter of the chairman of Orlando Pirates, Irvin Khoza.
She passed away in 2006 after multiple organ failures.
Female soccer teams from Gauteng participated in the tournament since August 9 and the finals were held on September 24.
The team was knocked out in the finals with 0-3 penalties against Diepkloof Ladies Football Club.
Team coach, Mkhonza Mkhonzana, says the team dominated the game against their opponents but failed to use the scoring opportunities.
“We had good opportunities but even if we played for two days we would not have scored.
“We have identified the areas to improve and we will work on tightening the weak areas.
“The team walked away with silver medals and soccer kits,” he says.
Mkhozana says the u-17 team was knocked out in the semi-finals against the Orange Farm Ladies FC.
“They played to a 2-3 lose,” he says.
Mkhonzana says he is grateful for the opportunity for the team to have participated in the tournament.
“There are no female soccer teams in the area and they are often forced to play with the male teams.
“This also helps them to be fit on the pitch and master their soccer skills,” he says.
Mkhonzana says the Home Sweepers will be playing against Sundowns Ladies FC at KwaThema Stadium on Sunday from 3pm.
“Residents are invited to support the team on their home grounds and have the opportunity to interact with the players,” he says.
