Total Success grooms boxing champ

Vuyo 'Holy Boy' Mnguni says boxing is more than a sport: It has made him a better person

Tsakane – Vuyo ‘Holy Boy’ Mnguni (15) came home from the South African Junior and School Boys’ Boxing Championship victorious.

“It was an easy road for me this time.

“I believe we did most of the work while preparing for the tournament.

“By the time I got there, I knew exactly what to do.

“I just took my time and enjoyed every round,” explains Holy Boy.

Coach Lwazi Xundu and Vuyo ‘Holy Boy’ Mnguni believe consistency is key in order to excel.

The tournament took place in Malamulele, Limpopo, from September 25 to 29.

Coach and founder of Total Success Boxing Club Lwazi Xundu says he is extremely proud of the young boxer.

“We had a vision, we worked on the preparation together and now we have accomplished it,” he says.

Established in 2014, Xundu says the club has had some challenges competing in big tournaments, but they seem to have overcome most of those challenges.

“My dream was to take some of the boys to national contests.

“I want to encourage other young people who are interested in boxing to join us,” says Xundu.

Holy Boy says he believes he is a better person now than he was before he started boxing.

“The sport is not just about having fun.

“We are taught life principles as well.

“I have learnt to be persistent and never to give up.

“Once I decide I want something, I go for it and I don’t stop until I get it.

“Boxing has taught me to be physically and mentally fit.”

Xundu wants to appeal to parents to support their children when they express interest in sport.

“As coaches there is only so much we can do when parents are not allowing us to groom their children.

“For example, if a child is not doing well academically, I am willing to sit with the child and parents to find a solution to the problem.

“What I don’t want is for parents to forbid children from boxing as a method of punishment,” he explains.

Total Success Boxing Club is based in Extension Five, Tsakane.
