8 Ways to ease your baby’s post-vaccination pain

Pain is a common after-effect of vaccination. Minimising pain can help make vaccination less intimidating and stressful for your baby.

Vaccinations protect your newborn from a variety of potentially fatal infections. Babies are especially susceptible to viruses because their immune systems are not fully developed. As a result, it is critical that your baby receives all recommended vaccinations on time.

Many parents become distressed at seeing their babies wince in pain following an injection. However, there are a few ways you can help soothe your tot and reduce their pain.

1. Hold your baby while they’re vaccinated

When babies are held by their parents, they settle down and cry less. This is because familiar touch provides them with a sense of security.

2. Feed them

Because infants concentrate on a single task at a time, feeding your baby following vaccination might help divert their attention and also significantly reduce the pain. Breastfeeding your baby more frequently following the immunisation will also help them stay hydrated and avoid developing a fever.

3. Distract them

While your baby is being injected, distract them with their favourite toy. This can assist in diverting their attention away from the pain.

4. Cool the injected Area with a compress/ice pack

A cool compress might help minimise swelling or pain at the injection site. Soak a cloth in cold water and apply it to the area that has been injected. Alternatively, you might use an ice pack to alleviate the pain.

5. Ask about numbing creams

You may request that your child’s paediatrician apply numbing cream or spray prior to the injection.

6. Enquire about combination shots

Vaccinations against many diseases can be combined in a single shot to minimise the number of injections your baby must get. You can verify this with your paediatrician.

7. Gently rub your infant’s skin

Before and after an injection, gently rubbing the area surrounding the injected location can help alleviate pain.

8. Remain calm

Maintain a calm demeanour while holding your infant to prevent them from being anxious.
