Tsakani entrepreneur Azwindini Mudau turns job loss into thriving construction business
After losing his job, Azwindini Mudau chose to build his own future, and now employs seven people while mentoring local youth.
Tsakani – Azwindini Mudau (26) has turned hardship into opportunity, founding his own construction company after a difficult journey marked by poverty, limited education, and unemployment.
Originally from Venda, he grew up in an impoverished household where survival often took priority over schooling.
Although he attended school and even attempted his Grade 12 exams, the pressures at home forced him to abandon his studies before completing them.
“Instead of focusing on books, I found myself working to help support my family, a responsibility that shaped much of my early life,” he said.
Determined to change his circumstances, Mudau later relocated to Gauteng in search of better opportunities. Like many young people in South Africa facing unemployment, he struggled to find stable work.
“At one point, I stood at street corners hoping to secure piece jobs, taking whatever work I could find just to get by.
“With no formal qualifications, I had to rely on general labour, moving from one opportunity to the next without certainty or stability.
“My fortunes began to shift when I secured a job as an administrator at a construction company,” he explained.
He said the role he had gotten was not directly in construction, but it exposed him to the industry and gave him insight into how such businesses operate.
This opportunity was short-lived. He lost his job, a setback that could have easily pushed him further into hardship.
“Instead of taking my job loss as a setback, the very next day, after a night of reflection, I had a realisation that would change my life.
“Rather than returning to the streets to search for another job, I decided to create my own. Motivated by the widespread unemployment among young people, I chose not only to build a future for myself but also to create opportunities for others,” he said.

“In the early hours of the morning, around midnight, I took a bold step to register my own construction company.”
Mudau emphasised that starting a business without experience or resources was not easy.
He admits that he had little knowledge of construction when he began and is still learning as he grows the company.
“Much of what I know today has come from hands-on experience and determination. Along the way, I received unexpected support from a woman who helped me despite not knowing me at the time.
“This act of kindness helped me dearly and I still appreciate the contribution,” he added.
Three years later, his company has grown and now employs seven people. The business focuses on house renovations and other construction-related services, steadily building a reputation and expanding its reach.

While his journey has been far from easy, he has proven that resilience and initiative can create opportunities even in the most challenging circumstances.
Beyond his business, Mudau is passionate about giving back to the community. He currently mentors 15 young boys between the ages of 16 and 20, guiding them away from drugs and alcohol and encouraging them to pursue better paths.
“Having experienced hardship firsthand, I understand the challenges they face and I am committed to helping them find purpose and direction.
“My biggest desire is to expand my efforts through sponsorships and initiatives such as computer training programs that can equip young people with practical skills for the future,” he cited.
Reflecting on his journey, he emphasises the importance of not allowing one’s background or current situation to define one’s future.
Mudau’s story is a testament to perseverance, self-belief, and the power of taking initiative. He encouraged young people to believe in their dreams and to work hard for what they truly want.
