Operation Shanela leads to 194 arrests as police tighten grip on crime in Duduza and Boksburg

Multi-agency operation cracks down on drugs, illegal outlets and traffic violations.

Duduza – A recent Operation Shanela led to the arrest of several individuals for various crimes in Duduza and Boksburg.

The operations, joined by senior officials, focused on checking for stolen vehicles, vehicle unroadworthiness and searching for stolen goods.

Preliminary successes include 17 illegal immigrants detained for verification, 22 traffic fines issued to the value of R8 400, nine suspects arrested for possession of drugs, including crystal meth and nyaope, four illegal liquor outlets closed, and six cases of possession of illicit cigarettes recorded.

Social crime prevention coordinator and communication officer, Constable Nobuhle Mnisi, said Ekurhuleni detectives’ pre-operation resulted in 194 arrests.

“A total of 194 arrests were recorded, with contact crimes accounting for the highest number at 101 cases,” she said.

“Other serious crimes followed with 71 arrests, while gender-based violence resulted in 33 arrests. Property-related crimes were the lowest, with 15 cases recorded.”

Mnisi further confirmed that crime intelligence pre-operation successes resulted in six arrests related to the possession of crystal meth and mandrax.

“In parallel with these operations, members of social crime prevention, together with other stakeholders, are conducting awareness campaigns in the community,” she said.
