AI Policy
At The Citizen, humans are responsible for every story we publish – from the research to the writing and editing.
Although generative AI can be a useful tool in many industries, it cannot replace the experience and skill developed by journalists and editors.
This is particularly important in an era where misinformation is spread widely and quickly.
All our stories are produced by people who need to first verify the information and then make a call on whether that information should be used.
Right now, many AI tools run the risk of providing incorrect information or contravening intellectual property rights.
The Citizen strives to keep the highest standard of editorial integrity. The use of generative AI is a risk to editorial integrity.
AI tools may be used to generate ideas for headlines or summaries of stories, and check grammar and spelling.
In the future AI may be used to make articles more accessible through voice automation or suggest stories that are customised towards a reader’s interest.
While using AI for these tasks, humans are still needed to approve the results.
