VACANCY: SENIOR DIGITAL JOURNALIST – POLITICS

An opportunity for a Senior Digital Journalist, specializing in Political reporting, exists within our Digital Department, reporting to the Digital News Editor of The Citizen.

Purpose of the Job:

To cover news events assigned by the Digital News Editor and to produce accurate and well-written stories daily for our publication.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Plan and write fresh, accurate copy to deadline for all platforms in co-operation with the Digital News Editor and Editor.
  • Researching of articles.
  • Verifying statements and facts.
  • Gathering of news from a variety of reliable sources.
  • Interviewing sources.
  • Generation of ideas and proposals for new stories.
  • Covering important events/issues timeously.
  • Staying up to date with privacy, contempt and defamation laws.
  • Liaising with editors, sub-editors, design and photographers.
  • Establishing and maintaining a network of contacts.
  • Adhere to Code of Ethics and Editorial Standards and Practices.
  • Monitor social media to pick up news leads and story ideas.
  • Upload, publish and promote stories to the website and online.
  • Assist with online administrative functions as directed.
  • Create, publish and promote multimedia content.
  • Guide, train and coach junior staff members.
  • Monitor analytics constantly.
  • Utilise analytics to maximise all stories and articles published on citizen.co.za.
  • Adhere to Google algorithm requirements and write with SEO and Google search in mind.
  • Study and adhere to The Citizen and citizen.co.za’s Voice and Style Guide.

Core Competencies Required:

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Journalism.
  • Minimum 5 years’ mainstream journalism experience.
  • Talent for writing, coupled with a keen interest in breaking news and current affairs.
  • Established network of political contacts.
  • Newsroom and current affairs writing experience.

Skills:

  • MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook.
  • Communication skills.
  • Relationship-building skills.

Aptitude:

  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Deadline driven.
  • High degree of professional journalistic conduct.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Availability to work overtime and on weekends.

  • Creativity, business and news sense, technological skills and a strong understanding of the relevant audience.

VACANCY- Online Sub-Editor

Remuneration: Market Related

Province: Gauteng

An opportunity for a skilled copy sub-editor exists within our Digital Department (Editorial), reporting to the Digital Editor of The Citizen.

General:

  • Must be competent as a copy sub.
  • Must be able to work according to strict deadlines.
  • Must be passionate about online news and newspapers and have a strong news sense and interest in current affairs.
  • Must work office-based shifts as per operational requirements.

Copyediting:

  • Writes or rewrites headlines that work well online, not relying on the headlines off the wires, from journalists or admins, or what was in the paper.
  • Able to correct common and more subtle errors of grammar, typos, etc.
  • Ability and application to rewrite and re-angle copy whenever necessary.
  • Give feedback to team members who commit the same errors repeatedly.
  • Should be able to prioritise stories.
  • Should have enough of a grounding in the facts of whatever stories are dominating the news cycle that he or she will be able to contextualise stories accurately where required or ask the journalist concerned to research and add required information.
  • Should be able to spot and rectify mistakes or have these re-checked if something does not seem right.
  • Should be aware of the laws that govern our industry so that we do not get into trouble legally or from a more general perspective.
  • Names need to be checked and their spelling needs to be consistent.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Citizen has a full time, office-based vacancy in its Johannesburg (Industria West) office for a SUB-EDITOR, reporting to the Chief Sub-editor.

General:

The successful candidate must:

  • be competent as a copy sub-editor.
  • be able to work according to strict deadlines.
  • pay meticulous attention to detail and have high standards of quality
  • be passionate about news and newspapers and have a strong news sense and interest in current affairs
  • be prepared to work shifts according to operational requirements
  • be able to multi-task
  • be able to work as part of a team to ensure a good-quality product
  • be aware of the state of affairs relating to copy flow and deadlines at all times

Copyediting:

  • Edit copy according to required standards.
  • Write creative headlines, captions and blurbs.
  • Keep up to date with current affairs. Have a keen interest in the news of the day and follow important stories.
  • Rewrite and re-angle stories where required.
  • Ensure a high standard of copy by re-reading and rewriting but delivering it on time.

Core Competencies:

Knowledge/Experience

  • Matric/Grade 12 qualification or SAQA Accredited Equivalent
  • An appropriate bachelor’s or higher degree in Journalism/Linguistics or appropriate work experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant sub-editing experience in mainstream journalism.
