Alberton Child Welfare appeals to community for support amid rising foster care needs
Alberton Child Welfare is appealing to the community for volunteers, donations, and foster care support as more children require care this festive season.
Alberton Child Welfare is calling on the community for help this festive season, as the number of children requiring foster care continues to rise.
“We used to get about three to four children a week, but now we’re getting six to seven children a week. This is during the festive season period,” said the organisation’s director, Anubha Mackerdhuj.
The increase is believed to be linked to festive season pressures, in which some parents get extra income but use it irresponsibly, resulting in child neglect.
“Parents are starting to get a lot of money. Now they use it to drink and end up neglecting their children,” Mackerdhuj added.
Urgent needs: volunteers, donations, and foster care
Alberton Child Welfare faces rising operational costs, with electricity bills reaching R7 000 to R9 000 per month, while relying heavily on government funding that is often insufficient.
“Last week alone, we received seven children. Tragically, they came with only the clothes they were wearing,” she said.
The organisation is appealing to the community for support, including:
Volunteers to assist with daily operations and child care.
Food and clothing donations for children in foster care.
Individuals willing to foster children who need safe, loving homes.
“We depend on the community to make sure all the children have a beautiful festive season. If anyone wants to foster a child or donate, contact Alberton Child Welfare,” Mackerdhuj explained.
