Donations, backpacks and community kindness help Zinnia’s Angels bring hope to children facing court

Zinnia’s Angels has thanked Mia Barnard and her sewing team for donating six handmade backpacks for abused children while also recognising the generosity of Charmaine Moolman, Nexus Computers and Heiny Bester.

Zinnia’s Angels has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the individuals and organisations whose generosity is helping bring comfort and hope to children and families facing difficult circumstances.

The organisation recently thanked Mia Barnard and her sewing team for completing six specially made backpacks for children who have experienced rape, abuse, molestation and violence.

Designed to provide both practical assistance and emotional comfort, the backpacks are given to children after they have been taken into care by the South African Police Service and while they await court proceedings.

Some children spend days in places of safety before appearing in court and are later placed with foster families or relatives.

To help them through this traumatic period, each backpack contains essential items including wet wipes, tissues, a notebook, pencil, colouring book, crayons, a small toy and snacks such as biscuits, sweets, chips and Oros.

The initiative began when Zinnia’s Angels approached Mia Barnard, who enjoys sewing and works with a group that produces washable sanitary pads, to assist with making the backpacks.

Thanks to the dedication of Barnard and her team, the first six bags have been completed, while nine backpacks have already been distributed to children through the programme.

Once packed, the backpacks are handed to Surieta Ligstad, who works with SAPS to ensure they reach children attending court.

The organisation is appealing for donations of fabric, string, colouring books, crayons, pencils, notebooks, tissues, wet wipes, sweets, biscuits, chips, Oros and small toys to help fill future backpacks.

Beyond the backpack initiative, Zinnia’s Angels also acknowledged the generosity of community members who continue to support its broader mission.

A special thank you was extended to Charmaine Moolman, who donated furniture, clothing, kitchen essentials, bathroom items and other household goods after moving from her four-bedroom home.

Zinnia’s Angels also recognised Nexus Computers and Heiny Bester for their valuable support. Bester has generously used his bakkie to assist with collecting donated goods, helping the organisation transport items to those who need them most.

As collections continue to grow, the organisation is appealing for a donor or business willing to sponsor or brand a dedicated bakkie for pick-up services, saying such support would significantly improve its ability to collect donations and expand its reach within the community.

“We thank all our donors for always assisting us. Together, we can offer children facing unimaginable circumstances a small measure of comfort and hope when they need it most,” said Zinnia Smit.

Residents who would like to contribute supplies, donate household goods or support the backpack project are encouraged to contact Zinnia’s Angels. For more information, contact Zinnia Smit on 066 479 3235.
