Alberton SAPS hosted a Sports Against Crime event at the Rondebult Sports Ground on July 14, bringing together soccer and netball teams from Alberton, Phumula and Rondebult for a day of friendly competition and community engagement.

The event was part of the Alberton SAPS’ ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the community and create positive opportunities for young people.

According to Alberton SAPS, the purpose of the event was to “promote healthy lifestyles, create a safe and positive environment for young people, and connect vulnerable youth with broader social support services”.

The initiative also aimed to build trust between the community and law enforcement by encouraging young people to make positive life choices.

Several organisations and stakeholders supported the event, including Stambo, Eskort Alberton, LOTS, Spiritual Crime Prevention, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), AMCARE, the African Youth Development Fund, Community Safety, Activ8, KE MOJA, the Alberton Crime Prevention Youth Desk and the Rondebult Clinic.

SAPS said sport played an important role in keeping young people actively involved in constructive activities throughout the day.

“Sport served as a positive disruption by keeping youth engaged in constructive activities, promoting teamwork, discipline, respect, and community spirit,” the statement read.

The event concluded with a message of collaboration, with SAPS highlighting that partnerships between law enforcement, community organisations and local businesses remain key to creating safer neighbourhoods.

“Through partnerships and community involvement, the event demonstrated that working together can help prevent crime and create safer communities for everyone,” SAPS said.
