TEST results are official, salmonella enterica was found on the soil, according to the Health Department on the grounds in/around/surrounding Andries Street, Alberton, Gauteng.

According to the Department of Health representative, only salmonella typhi can cause typhoid fever and nothing else.

Following up from a previous article, Dr Laubscher from Alberton stated, “Salmonella typhi is a bacteria that causes Typhoid fever in humans. Infected humans spread the bacteria through their faeces, even if they are not sick themselves. Soil or food contaminated in this way can spread the disease.”

“We have not established the source – where the child in this case was contaminated. Unfortunately, children of this age touch things and put fingers in their mouths.”

Salmonella typhi is not very common in our area. Other forms of Salmonella species such as salmonella enterica are more common and tend to cause a much milder disease.

Nathan had been infected with typhoid fever which is only caused by salmonella typhi-, somewhere the missing link seems to be evident whereby only salmonella enterica was found. There had not been any evidence of salmonella typhi-. The concern is how then had the child been infected, considering that salmonella typhi is the only thing that can cause typhoid fever. Typhoid fever, also known simply as typhoid, is a common worldwide bacterial disease transmitted by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the faeces of an infected person, which contain the bacterium Salmonella enterica enterica, serovar typhi.
