Alberton Toastmasters new president to take club to new heights

Toastmasters empowers members by developing communication and leadership skills.

THE newly-elected Alberton Toastmasters Club president, whose term of office will run from July 1 to June 30, 2019, has promised to take the club to new heights while ensuring members grow and fulfil their potential.

Charles Mokoena was elected as president at the club’s annual general meeting (AGM) together with a new executive committee.

The new committee is made up of Vuyo Sabani (vice-president education), Quinton Losper (vice-president membership and public relations officer), Brian Gordon-Davis (treasurer), Adri Fourie (secretary and outgoing president) and Hester van der Merwe (sergeant-at-arms).

“My quest for the club is to achieve presidential distinguished club status while pursuing this goal I’d like to create a friendly and supportive environment for members,” said Mokoena.

He added that the club is not about presiding officers, but its members. “Therefore, participation by members, and being part of the process is key to the club achievements. If members don’t achieve their goals, the club will also not achieve.”

The club’s outgoing president Adri Fourie, had this to say about her term of office: “It was an honour to serve as president of Alberton Toastmasters. What I love about Toastmasters is that you can learn in a fun, stimulating and supportive environment. The highlight was the fact that at Toastmasters you are accepted as you are, and encouraged to grow and learn at your own pace.”

At the AGM, the club honoured its members who have done well for the year which ended in June.

Adri Fourie took home four awards including the award for the Toastmaster of year, impromptu contest, humorous speaking contest and English prepared.

Other award winners were Ronnie Martin (evaluation contest winner and accept the challenge), Vuyo Sabani (speaking excellence and club builder), Quinton Losper (most improved evaluator and spirit of success), Charles Mokoena (most improved speaker, potjiekos competition and oudstryder) and Tsholoane Moeketsi (young Toastmaster award).

Toastmasters is an international non-profit organisation which provides a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
