Despite South Africa having officially moved to Level 3 lockdown on June 1, Alberton Methodist Church has confirmed that it will remain closed.
This comes after the government introduced new regulations, one of them permitting church gatherings. However, gatherings must be limited to 50 people and health protocols such as social distancing must be followed.
Rev Jeff van der Spuy announced that they will not be reopening services on Sunday under the current restrictions imposed by Level 3 of the lockdown.
“This is after much prayer, deliberation and engagement with medical, religious and social dynamics. We have made this decision based on the role we play within the community as a whole. “Church is not a building, but rather it is the witness of the word in our social settings, families and communities in which we live,” said van der Spuy.
He said they will continue with all their current streaming services and beginning to offer pastoral care and guidance under new guidelines.
“For the month of June at the very least we will not be ‘reopening’ the church. May God bless Africa, guard her children, guide her leaders, and give her peace,” he said.
The church will continue live streaming its services on Sunday at 9am on their Facebook page under the name Alberton Methodist Church.
