WATCH: Fire badly damages house in Marthinus Oosthuizen Avenue

No one was home at the time of the fire.

A fire broke out at a house in Marthinus Oosthuizen Avenue, Alberton this Monday afternoon, August 31.

The cause of the fire could not be established at this stage.

According to reports on scene, no one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported in the incident.

Tyrone van der Merwe from CPS  Security said they managed to get the dogs out of the yard safely.

Emergency services, security companies and the fire department are on the scene to offer their assistance.

An update will follow as soon as more information is available.

Useful tips on how to prevent your house from going up in flames

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RSPA) has the following tips, to prevent fire accidents:

*Keep all fires and heaters well-guarded, especially open fires.

*Keep portable heaters and candles away from furniture and curtains. Position them safely where they cannot be knocked over

*Don’t dry or air clothes over or near the fire or the cooker

*Do not smoke in bed

*Many fires start in the kitchen, especially fat fires. Never leave a pan unattended when deep fat frying and watch for overheating.

*If there are children around, keep matches and lighters well out of reach

*Fit approved smoke detectors on each floor. Choose a smoke alarm that is mains operated or one with a long life (ten years) battery

*Plan your escape route.
