WATCH: Dignitaries officially handover Silwerkroon lift

Silwerkroon residents received much-needed relief during the cutting of the ribbon and official handover of their new lift on February 1.

Silwerkroon residents received much-needed relief during the cutting of the ribbon and official handover of their new lift on February 1.

Years after struggling with their lift, seniors at the residence were excited to be lifted from one floor to another.

This follows the installing of their new technologically advanced lift, which took at least three months to complete. The handover was attended by the City of Ekurhuleni’s dignitaries, contractors, residents, and alderman Bruna Haipel.

Contracted through the CoE, Musan Trading Enterprise, a construction company, which has been operating for 13 years, committed to installing the new lift.

Sarah Ziramba of Musan Trading Enterprise told the RECORD that despite a few challenges, they managed to successfully complete installing the lift.

“It has been an honour being a part of this project. We have completed the project within the budget and within contract time. Our contract is a two-year contract but we have managed to deliver the whole project in less than a year and maintenance will be for one year,” she said.

She commended Silwerkroon residents for being very cooperative and patient throughout the whole journey.

“Apart from a few issues from the community wanting subcontracting work which we could not accommodate due to the sensitivity of lift installation, we could only employ local general labourers to assist with work on site. The City also assisted in addressing the issues with the community,” said Ziramba.

In absentia, MMC for Human Settlements councillor Lesiba Mpya said he was proud to hand over the new lift to the residents.

“This facility will allow residents to move swiftly within the building after a long wait. We want to thank the senior citizens for allowing us to provide them with dignified human settlement. This is also in remembrance of those residents who died during lockdown, may their souls rest in peace,” said Mpya.

He told the RECORD that the lift purchase agreement also came with a backup generator that will kick in when power is out or when load-shedding is implemented.

Ward 106 councillor alderman Bruna Haipel, who had constantly questioned the progress of this project, welcomed the installation of the new lift.

Resident Stephanus Viviers, who shares his sentiments with many other residents, thanked Haipel’s intervention on the new lift saga.

“We thank Bruna for her fight in making sure that this becomes a success. She’s been fighting for about 10 years that this gets resolved. If the grass needs cutting or our machine is not working, she fights to get things resolved. We are satisfied with the lift and this will be of great help,” he said.
