WATCH: Learners of Martins Academy give Jackson Dam a facelift
As part of their community project, Martins Academy initiated a project to clean up the area outside and around Jackson Dam in Brackenhurst on March 12.
Martins Academy facilitates a community service project each term where learners work with the environment, animals, the elderly or children.
The clean-up was said to coincide with the country moving to alert level one, and with parks having opened up.
Learners picked up litter, removed weeds and planted water-wise seedlings, which they graciously contributed.
Habib Properties and Protective Force Security joined in on the project by assisting with supplies and keeping learners safe, treating them with refreshments.
Melanie Ferreira-Martins of Martins Academy said: “We believe educating our youth is more than opening a book in the classroom. Teaching our youth to engage and serve our community not only allows them to give back but it also builds character.”
She said the project was a good choice for learners as it promoted social distancing and less contact in minimising the risks of exposure to the pandemic.
Ward 94 councillor Marina van Wyk, who was also present on the day, endorsed the learners’ involvement through the community project.
Mitch de Sousa, GM of Protective Force, assured the RECORD they will commit to voluntarily offering their security services at Jackson Dam.
He said as a means to curb crime, they are hoping to instal security cameras at the parking lot.
