Alberton Methodist Church provides nutritious meals to locals
The Alberton Methodist Church has committed to feeding locals with nutritious meals through their weekly soup kitchen.
What started with feeding just nine people every morning has since increased to providing meals for up to 240 people per week through the Alberton Methodist Church’s soup kitchen.
The soup kitchen was started on December 14, 2020, when the congregation noticed the ever-increasing need for people to receive a meal daily.
As many places were looking at closing for the Christmas season, they felt that the time was right to step into the gap and feed locals throughout December.
Those visiting the soup kitchen, being job seekers among others, receive nutritious meals and a morning devotion to kick-start their day.
Youth pastor Anthony Hattingh said the team has gotten to know many of the morning visitors by name and their stories as they continuously encourage them in their life’s journey.
“The soup kitchen runs from the church premises from Monday to Friday between 8am and 9am as well as on public holidays. A team of volunteers cooks and provides the soup and serves those attending,” he said.
Hattingh said they desperately need assistance with fresh vegetables, bread or monetary contributions and volunteers.
“We would appreciate volunteers who are able to cook and drop off the soup at the church, and people who will assist with serving. If anyone is interested in getting involved with the soup kitchen, they can contact me on 011 907 2807,” he said.
