Law offenders kept off the streets through crime-busting operation
Law enforcers joined hands in sweeping crime off the streets of Alberton during the Okae Molao operation conducted on May 20 in New Market.
Numerous law enforcement stakeholders joined forces during the Okae Molao operation conducted on May 20 in Heidelberg Road, New Market.
The crime prevention operation, which was declared a huge success, was targeted at keeping the streets of Alberton crime-free.
It was a joint venture with members of the Ekurhuleni District SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Police and EMPD.
Vehicle Identification and Safeguarding (VIS) Unit and Home Affairs Immigration Inspectorate also joined in on the day. The team conducted roadblocks, searches and crime-prevention patrols.
The integrated operation was spearheaded by newly appointed Ekurhuleni district commissioner Maj-Gen Anna Mateisi.
According to Mateisi, the operation was intensified in the area following alarming reports of car hijackings and truck burnings.
“We decided as a district to bring in resources from other stations to come and address crime. We started on May 19 with our tracing operation, and we arrested about 290 suspects within the districts,” she said.
She said arrests ranged from gender-based violence, armed robbery, assaults, car hijackings, kidnapping, fraud and possessions of stolen vehicles.
She also told the RECORD they chose the route because it is mostly used by people coming into the area.
“We have arrested 16 illegal immigrants and about 29 fines were issued to motorists to the value of R9 300. Our operation focused on everything illegal, from vehicles to the people driving those vehicles. We also had a team that was dealing with our liquor outlets,” said Mateisi.
