LISTEN: Palm Ridge’s star makes his way to this year’s SAMA awards
A young man who grew up in a township characterised by lack of resources and who strongly believes in music has made the Alberton community proud by being nominated for the South Africa Music Awards in the SAMPRA Artist of the Year category.
A shout-out goes to Palm Ridge’s Tokoloho Mavuso, also known as Haksul Muziq, for his nomination in the South African Music Awards 28 (SAMA28).
Haksul is nominated in the SAMPRA Artist of the Year category along with some of the big artists such as A-Reece, Musa Keys, Makhadzi, Emtee, Young Stunna and many more.
The Artist of the Year category was first introduced in 2021 and acknowledges musicians who entertained fans the most in the previous year as decided by the public.
Tokoloho Mavuso was born and bred in Ekurhuleni, where his love and passion for music grew.
According to the local star, music has been part of him since he was seven years old when he was playing drums and singing. He then became a DJ at the age of 16. He said it felt as if the music was dominating him.
“I was so fortunate to have my parents by my side because they always believed in me, and they encouraged me to be cultivated in everything I do to produce the best results,” said Haksul.
The SAMA28 awards are set to take place on July 31.
The reports come after the first round of nominees for Record of the Year, Music Video of the Year and SAMPRA Artist of the Year was announced.
Haksul has released eight singles that include Ungiphul’intliziyo, Unobubele ngami, Thank you, mom, Skoloto, Ubumnandi, In no time, Themba lam and Lengoma.
He has also worked with some of the hitmakers in the entertainment industry such as Dj Sbu, Big Zulu, Makhadzi, De Mthuda, Semi Tee, Kamo Mphela and Mfr Souls.
“It came as a surprise that I was nominated with big artists, especially in this category, to such an extent I googled more than six times if there is any other Haksul Muziq in the entertainment only to find out it was only me. I knew that one day I will make it to the SAMA stage, however, I did not expect it to be this soon,” he said.
He said that the Muziq in his stage name was derived from Naak Musiq who is an inspiration to him. He would like to share a stage or work on something with Naak one day.
