Alberton SPCA gets makeover for Mandela Day

As the call to assist local organisations, members of City of Johannesburg (CoJ) alongside Ward 106 committee members answered the call as part of Mandela Day commemoration.

The group of officials from CoJ including ward 23 dedicated their time to giving Alberton SPCA a facelift and presented donations on July 18.

The group handed over dog food, clothing and blankets to keep furry friends warm. They also helped with painting and pruning on the day.

According to Lynette Meyer of Ward 23, they were invited by Alberton SPCA and they invited ward 106 committee members to come on board.

“We don’t normally do this but we have adopted this SPCA for our ward. We also sent out a call to community members to come together during the day to make donations. Not only did we come out as the DA but as residents,” she said.

Whip of Council in the City of Johannesburg and ward 23 councillor, Tyrell Meyers, said: “We got a call from Alberton SPCA and asked if the office of the chief whip would be interested and we decided to help. A lot of community organisations need help, especially in these difficult times. We sith with an economy that is not all conducive to job creation right now and we want to help where we can.”

Lauren Martens of Alberton SPCA thanked the team for showing up on the day and appealed to community members to join the entity’s fundraising committee.

“We need people to get involved and assist with fundraisers and we need committee members. Those interested can email me on fundraising@spcaalberton.org.za,” she said.

She extended her gratitude to the group and said there are always things that need to be done at the facility.
Martens also said they always need volunteers and those willing to make a difference at the facility.
