A4A Project extends outreach in City of Johannesburg
The Action-For-Accountability (A4A) Project, focused on transparency and good governance, opened its doors to engage with the communities of Mondeor, Finetown, and Lenasia in the City of Johannesburg.
As the Action-For-Accountability (A4A) Project approaches the midway point of its journey, it steps beyond its initial boundaries to engage with the broader community in the three pilot sites in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ): Mondeor, Finetown and Lenasia.
This outreach initiative is poised to make a substantial impact, using community meetings to address critical issues directly affecting these communities.
The A4A Project, a collaboration between the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Accountability Lab South Africa, Public Service Accountability Monitor, the European Union and the Social Justice Initiative, is an endeavour that aims to foster transparency, good governance and civic participation in the CoJ.
As the project navigates the halfway mark of its timeline, it turns to the communities to share insights, and discuss challenges and strategies for the path ahead.
The upcoming community meeting, open to the public, will serve as a conduit for dialogue on several pressing topics that impact the lives of CoJ residents.
The discussions will encompass the following key areas:
• Navigating the turbulence of leadership changes
The volatile nature of political leadership in the CoJ has cast a shadow over service delivery and council oversight. The recent Audit Report from the auditor-general revealed a lack of measures to prevent irregular expenditures amounting to billions. Against the backdrop of a multifaceted socioeconomic and political crisis, the city is teetering on the brink. The community meetings will allow residents to share their experiences and challenges, shedding light on the effects of this crisis on their daily lives.
• Empowering communities through accountability
The heart of the meetings will be an overview of the accountability work accomplished since the project’s inception last February. Local Civic Action (CivAct) teams have championed select issues in each community, using accountability to make tangible strides in service delivery. Attendees will learn about the complex but rewarding journey of holding public officials accountable for upholding citizens’ rights.
• Identifying priority issues and sustained empowerment
With many service delivery concerns affecting communities, the meetings will guide the CivAct teams to pinpoint three critical areas that demand heightened attention during the remaining course of the project. This approach ensures the project’s efforts remain focused on delivering impactful results.
• Beyond the horizon: sustaining accountability efforts
Local CivAct teams will share their empowerment journeys, revealing how participation in the A4A project catalysed long-term accountability endeavours that transcended the project’s timeline.
The project’s initiatives, including its media incubator that trained local storytellers, and surveys conducted by Community Frontline Associates, strengthened the community’s voice and influence.
To enrich the dialogue and provide expert insights, community members can expect presentations by experts well-versed in issues pertinent to their locality. These meetings will be thought-provoking and aim to inspire solutions and foster collective progress.
The community meeting will be on September 9 at the Mondeor High School Auditorium from 10:00 to 12:00.
