Mondeor Sector 1 Crime Forum Relaunches LPR Programme with New Sponsors

Mondeor's innovative Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) programme, now bolstered by new sponsors, is poised to make significant strides in crime reduction.

Mondeor Sector 1 Crime Forum, a structure of the Mondeor CPF, relaunched its automatic licence plate recognition (LPR) programme with new sponsors on September 16.

The programme aims to alert local responders to vehicles sought by the SAPS and security companies in the area.

The responders comprise Mondeor CPF volunteer patrollers, participating security companies, the Mondeor SAPS members and the JMPD.

Expanding security response

According to the chairperson of the Mondeor CPF, Mike Fontes, the project, launched in May 2021 with Vumacam as a partner, saw the suburbs of Glenvista, Bassonia, Mulbarton, Glenanda South and Liefde-en-Vrede covered by this technology.

“In the initial two years of the LPR programme, over 150 vehicles sought by the SAPS were detected, stopped, and impounded. These operations resulted in more than 40 arrests, significantly denting criminal activities in the region. “Furthermore, the LPR cameras have become invaluable tools for investigations, with detectives regularly using the captured data to track vehicles and gather evidence,” explained Fontes.

Fontes said the project’s second phase, which started in May, welcomed CPS Security into the fold.

“This addition brought together the two most active security companies in the area, boasting highly trained and well-equipped tactical response teams. The increased density of reaction officers and the collective efforts of these security firms have made it increasingly challenging for criminals to operate in the community,” said Fontes.

Financial contributions and community support

Fontes said the success of the LPR programme would not have been possible without the financial support of sponsors.

“Fox Security, CPS Security and the Glenvista, Mulbarton, Glenanda and Bassonia community forums have all played instrumental roles in sustaining this essential community safety project. “

Their contributions have ensured this programme remains cost-free for the residents of Mondeor, demonstrating a commitment to giving back to the community.

“We must also thank the support from the Mondeor SAPS and JMPD. This is an excellent example of how public-private community safety plans can help in the fight against crime,” said Fontes.

The Mondeor Sector 1 Crime Forum always needs additional funding to expand the camera network and strengthen the community’s security infrastructure. Individuals and businesses interested in financially supporting this vital programme can do so and benefit from associated marketing opportunities.

“We are always looking for additional funding to grow the camera network. If you or your company want to support the programme financially, you receive a marketing benefit associated with this project.”

According to Mondeor SAPS station commander, Colonel Jacques Bezuidenhoudt, the programme’s impact was extraordinary.

“Since its inception, our community has seen a remarkable 60 to 70% reduction in house burglaries. This level of progress over just a few years is exceptional, given that areas typically maintain a steady history of crime. Implementing the LPR has brought about a drastic and positive transformation in our safety landscape,” said Bezuidenhoudt.
