VIDEO: Young Uber driver murdered in cold blood during routine ride request

At just 23, Katleho Motloung was building a future through hard work and compassion. But a routine Uber ride turned fatal, cutting short the life of a young man who turned obstacles into opportunity. His family and community now seek justice.

In a heart-wrenching tragedy that has left a community in mourning, 23-year-old Uber driver Katleho Motloung was murdered during what was meant to be a routine ride in Palm Ridge on June 13.

Katleho was an aspirational young man who made it his mission to turn obstacles into opportunities. In a country plagued by soaring youth unemployment, he refused to wait for a break. Instead, he took matters into his own hands.

He had recently started a modest but steadily growing car repair business and had become the main breadwinner for his family.

According to family spokesperson Nkgatiseng, his business was progressing daily, driven by his relentless work ethic and determination.

To supplement his income during quieter periods, Katleho began working as an Uber driver, using a vehicle borrowed from his supportive sister. It was a decision born from ambition and responsibility, but one that would ultimately cost him his life.

According to data from the Uber app, Katleho picked up passengers at 19:36. Less than 20 minutes later, shortly before 19:56, he was shot. He was rushed to a local clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Police investigations are ongoing.

“He truly believed life is what you make of it. He refused to wait for opportunities. He created them,” said a devastated Nkgatiseng.

Described by friends and family as kind-hearted, courageous, and deeply selfless, Katleho was known for small acts of kindness that left lasting impressions. Evelyn Mokoena, a sister-in-law, recalled how he often drove people to job interviews and graduations free of charge, just to brighten their day.

An elderly neighbour shared that Katleho was the only person she trusted with her banking details. He regularly helped her with groceries and essentials. In a particularly touching tribute, she remembered how Katleho supported her through every step of her daughter-in-law’s funeral arrangements. “From the first day to the last, he made sure everything was taken care of,” she said.

Born on July 27, 2001, Katleho died just weeks before what would have been his 24th birthday. He leaves behind his grieving parents, fiancée, five-month-old child and five siblings. His loss leaves a void in a household he supported both emotionally and financially.

The case was officially opened at Eden Park SAPS after initial jurisdictional confusion, as it was first reported at a station near the clinic where he died.

Community members are demanding justice and improved safety for ride-hailing drivers, who often face dangerous working conditions.

A memorial and candlelight vigil were held in Katleho’s honour, with mourners calling him “a captain of life.”
